Dentist in Georgetown

At our practice, we offer comprehensive oral cancer screenings as part of your routine dental care. Early detection of oral cancer is crucial for improving treatment outcomes. Like all cancers, the sooner oral cancer is diagnosed, the better the chances of successful treatment. Regular screenings serve as the first line of defense, and our dentist is dedicated to helping you maintain your health through this simple yet vital preventative measure.

During an oral cancer screening, our dentist will examine your lips, tongue, gums, mouth, and throat for any abnormalities that could indicate cancer or may develop into cancer in the future. We also consider any symptoms you may have been experiencing. If you notice any of the symptoms of oral cancer that persist for more than a week, it’s essential to seek help promptly. Schedule an appointment with our office and inform our dentist right away. Common symptoms to watch for include:

● Ear pain

● Unexplained mouth bleeding

● Mouth sores that do not heal

● White or red patches in the mouth

● Unexplained weight loss

● Lumps or swellings around the mouth

● A sore throat without other sinus-related symptoms

● A sensation of something stuck in the back of your throat

● Pain or difficulty when swallowing, speaking, or moving your jaw or tongue

Oral cancer is a serious disease, and tragically, one adult dies from it every hour in the U.S. While anyone can develop oral cancer, certain factors can increase your risk. Some of the most common risk factors include genetic predisposition, prolonged sun exposure, poor diet, excessive alcohol consumption, and tobacco use. Men are more likely to develop oral cancer than women, and individuals with gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) are also at higher risk. Tobacco users, whether smoking or chewing, are six times more likely to develop oral cancer compared to non-users.

The success of oral cancer treatment largely depends on the size, type, and stage of the cancer at diagnosis. Early detection is critical for successful recovery. When oral cancers are caught in their early stages, the survival rate is between 80-90%, as treatment can often involve less invasive procedures. As the cancer progresses, it becomes more challenging to treat, spreading beyond the mouth and leading to more severe complications.

We are currently accepting new patients and encourage you to schedule an appointment if you’re due for a screening. If you have any questions about oral cancer or our screening services, please contact our office today for a consultation.
